Stronglifts 5x5

Probably the best and most popular program for beginner, intermediate, and advanced lifters. I tried it a long time ago but didn't see huge success with it. I would say that's because I was progressing too quickly for my level of experience (every 1-2 workouts). The difference this time is I'll be progressing per exercise every 4 workouts. I don't know how effective progressive overload is at different points with SL (before or after 4 workouts), but I didn't see progress with less, so 4 is what I'm going with currently.

I think Stronglifts is the right choice. I tried ignoring my urges to pursue this program for a few days after starting weights, thinking 3x4 would be more effective. But I kind of saw a stall in progress with the full body routine on day 6, so the next logical choice is to do what everyone else is doing.

However I may or may not try the assistance exercises, they are described on the site as not totally necessary. I did see decent progress up to a point with just compounds using 3x4, but as Medhi says, performing the big 5 in a full body routine gets too taxing on the body as you increase resistance. Eventually I wouldn't have been able to complete my workouts (I remember with SL just 3 exercises would feel heavy after a few weeks).

If you start weight training, people in general will point you in the direction of SL. Time to try this again.
