There is major controversy over the balancing of testosterone and cortisol in caffeine. From increases in workout performance to increased stress levels, the explanation may have a lot to do with these two hormones, but can other factors come into play? What does the research say? Is caffeine bad for our health or is just the healthiest dietary supplement on the planet?
A study published on Pubmed claims there is a positive correlation between caffeine intake and skeletal muscle hypertrophy.
Here is a link: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29359224/
The article states that"Coffee supplementation was observed to increase skeletal muscle hypertrophy", which means there is an increase in the size of muscle fibers. That being said, this study proves you can use caffeine to enhance your body composition.
A second study from the same source describes how participants who consumed more than 4 cups of coffee had higher levels of "free testosterone" and lower concentrations of "free estradiol" (estrogen).
Research also shows that weight lifters consuming coffee up to an hour prior to a workout have increased grip strength, energy, stamina, and power output.
From these findings, we can conclude that caffeine is a popular dietary supplement for athletes and bodybuilders. It increase muscle size and workout performance via testosterone.
Unfortunately, the cortisol response to caffeine has also been proven scientifically, but it remains a mystery why some claim it has no effect. Others might say caffeine does increase their stress levels, but it suits their exercise and weight management goals. Most caffeine consumers would never give up this part of their diet, and for good reason.
